August’s Alumnae Spotlight features Delta Chapter‘s very own Star Gilani! She was #1 in the Upsilon line and currently lives in Sugar Land, TX.
Currently, I am the Tourism & Marketing Manager for Visit Sugar Land Convention and Visitor Services. My job is to market Sugar Land as a premier destination for travel to families and businesses alike to increase tourism dollars generated in the city.
Kappa Phi Gamma Sorority, Inc. shaped my professional efforts and goals. It served as the foundation of my professional philosophy and thought me how to work in a team filled with multiple personalities but towards a common goal.
I wished I had learned the importance of building relationships and had a developed a leadership philosophy sooner. We’ve all heard our professors encourage us to attend networking events and even lead in team projects but I didn’t grasp the value of these traits until I started working full-time and managing my own staff.
I get to eat, travel and brag on a city that I love… what’s not to like?
Honestly, i’m still working to find the right balance. I find myself working on all sorts of projects after-hours and early mornings but it’s something i’m consciously working on.
The most significant benefits came from being an active member in the Sorority. It enlisted responsibility, time-management, and leadership qualities that have shaped my career. KPhiG also thought me how to care for the unprivileged and respect the pillars of womanhood and culture.
Be bold and don’t settle. Find the right mentors and pave your own way. Most importantly, be passionate about the Hospitality Industry as it supports thousands of jobs and produces millions of economic dollars annually.
